Captain Smith in 1968: He had long retired from the SAP and
was now a member of the South African Parliament

Soon after the war ended and normal shipping services were resumed the Blue Star Line, owners of the Dunedin Star,
in appreciation of what Captain Smith had done to help rescue her crew and passengers,
invited the Smith family to be its guests on one of its ships on a voyage from South Africa to England and back.
