Denis Scully, who swam from the moored lifeboat to the beach with a lifeline and thus provided the connection that enabled the first of the castaways from the Dunedin Star to be taken from the beach.

Rescuer and rescued

A rescuer with some of the rescued. Union Defence Force Corporal Harvey, driver of the truck, in front, brings four crewmen of the Dunedin Star back to civilisation after their four weeks' ordeal.
